Jeanne Hovde

American author of children's books. I think she wrote just the one pony book and a handful of other animal related/adventure stories. It is a pity she didn't write more equine themed stories as her solo pony novel is really very good, if heart-rending.

Pony Books:

A HORSE NAMED CINNAMON
aka A HORSE FOR CASSIE
(CHARIOT 1982)
Reprinted in paperback, most recently in 1988.
Published under two different names.
SUMMARY: Cassie longs for a real riding pony but has to make do with the ill-tempered Belgian draught horse Stampede, whom her father bought to breed from. When Stampede gives birth to a foal, Cassie is entranced by the filly and spends all her time with her. But she still feels jealous when she sees local children riding their own ponies. She is terribly punished for this jealousy when tragedy strikes...but out of the tragedy she forms a new awareness of what is important in life and is rewarded in more ways than one.
PONYMAD VIEW: An excellent, thoughtful horse story which explores the issues of envy and learning to appreciate what you have, although the heroine learns her lesson in a hard and shocking way. Hankies may be needed for this one!
PONYMAD RATING: 4 HORSESHOES

Collectors info:
Rarely seen in the UK but pretty easy to get hold of in the USA and quite low cost.
